Ike, I see your point. Maybe part of our jobs as enthusiasts and practitioners to help coach and develop those within our influence.

Beth, always glad to have you visit! I like your perspective on investment and return. I've never considered marketing and public relations in that context before...you've given me something to think about. Thanks for your contribution, those two cents are weighty.

AngieT, glad to see you here. Catching up on posts you missed? :-)

Nice addition to the conversation Heather. I still think that companies need a plan to measure themselves against what their return on investment is...and that doesn't necessarily equate to money spent (investment) and sales gained (return). It could equate to engagement (investment) and loyalty gained (return). The irony to me is that most marketing plans do not include objectives that can be measured, but most PR/communications plans do. I am beginning to think that's why social media is easier for those folks to wrap their heads around it than it is for marketers. This debate will be on-going for years to come...I've thrown my 2 cents on the table for now.

Sadly, for every 5 marketers who get into it, 1 "gets" it and the other 4 get burned... only to be replaced by another wave of newbies who as a generalization don't "get it."
